Sagittarius 2021

CHOOSE TO FACE THE LIGHT

The Sun entered the constellation of the Archer late night on December 20 this year according to the astronomical observations of the sky. The ecliptic constellations that we see as the zodiac from the Earth move about 1 degree every 72 years. While the Sun entered the constellation of the Sea-Goat—known as the sign of the Capricorn—at the Winter Solstice about 2000 years ago, it now enters the Archer, known as the Sagittarius sign. Yet, we’re still used to the Capricorn dates from December 21 to January 20. Perhaps some meaning continues to be in the astrological dates for the zodiacal signs. Perhaps we are offered a glimpse into how the human consciousness has progressed when we compare the neighboring zodiacal constellations and their relations to the Sun’s path.

What does it mean for us, humans, when the Sun moves from the Scorpio/Scorpion to the Sagittarius/Archer during the darkest part of the year? During the sign of the Scorpio, we’re exploring the emotions and spiritual depths through the spiral labyrinth of the Scorpion, deep down in our psyche. In the eurythmy gesture of the Scorpio, the left arm is pointing down, clad in the dark purple, while standing upright. It’s an invitation to consciously explore the shadows of our unconscious realms.

When down below, we are offered the guidance by the Light at the end of the tunnel, emitted by the Archer. But we need to choose to look up, we need to be able to discern the differences between the shadows and the enlightened sparks. Sagittarius, acting as the Guardian of the Threshold, brightens the deep purple of the Scorpio into the healing lavender vibes. The depth of knowledge, gained through experience, is enabled to be seen through the Spirit Light.

Sagittarius Seal by Rudolf Steiner

However, when life gets tough here on Earth—caused by the pandemic, politics, commercialization of the holidays, to name a few reasons—we may lose our connection to the Christ through our Highest Self. We may bend down into the shadows and fall out of our column of light. Rudolf Steiner offered a very simple, yet powerful I-A-O (pronounced “ee-ah-oh”) harmonious movement meditation. The I-A-O movement meditation is the first eurythmy exercise, which Rudolf Steiner gave to Lory Maier-Smits in September of 1912 in Munich, Germany. From Hawaiian shamanism, we learn that ‘IAO is the sacred name for the Infinite Light, the Light of the World. The ancient Gnostic text Pistis Sophia informs us that the resurrected Christ and his disciples used the invocation I-A-O to call upon the boundless Light of the Universe. If you’d like to learn the I-A-O exercise, the audio and written guided meditations are available for free by clicking here or on the image below.

Let’s look up and allow the Archer to assist us. In the eurythmy gesture, the Sagittarius steps forward with its right leg, the right elbow pointing forward, while the right hand is supported by the front part of the left shoulder, and the left arm is gently hugging the lower right arm. Active, conscious, bright energy is ready to protect and nurture, to heal.

The constellation of the Archer offers humanity the gift of the sounds K (as in “key”) and G (as in “guardian”). The consonant K, with its sharp gesture in the carmine and vermillion red hues, surrounded by warm yellow, helps us cut away all that is no longer of service. The consonant G—in its apparel of yellow, silver grey, and blue—parts the veils so that we can step into the Light with humility.

The process of letting go of what is no longer needed and acknowledging the Spirit within us now happens from Winter Solstice to Christmas and during the Holy Nights, from Christmas through the Three Kings Day and Epiphany, or rather, during the Sun’s annual visit with the Archer from December 20 through January 20.

Rudolf Steiner offers more insights for our inner work while rippled with the Archer’s vibes. Here are his contemplative words for the mood of Sagittarius:

Becoming achieves the power ‘to be’,
Into what is, the might of becoming dies.
Achievement resolves the desire to strive
Into prevailing will-force of life.
In dying, there ripens prevailing of worlds,
Forms disappear within forms.
What has come to be, may it feel what is!

(Rudolf Steiner’s Sagittarius verse from Twelve Moods, translated from German by Ruth and Hans Pusch)

“Becoming achieves the power ‘to be’,” echoes the Sun, but each one of us needs to choose the path to follow, to fully enter and be with what is surrounding us, as Venus advises: “Into what is, the might of becoming dies.”

When the chosen path is attuned with our destiny, the mood of serenity permeates us, and the words of Mars and Mercury resound: “Achievement resolves the desire to strive into prevailing will-force of life.”

Jupiter and Saturn share the words of wisdom: “In dying, there ripens prevailing of worlds; forms disappear within forms.” Yes, may we dissolve the walls of prisons of fears and transform the shadows into Light.

Let’s be open to be healed, step by step, and comprehend the message of the Moon: “What has come to be, may it feel what is!”

The journey from the deep purple of Scorpio to the light lavender of Sagittarius then repeats every month, assisted by the waning and waxing of the Moon, which bathes the Earth with the transformative violet rays. The celestial being of Luna gives humanity the double vowel of Ai (pronounced “ah-ee”). In the English language, the pronoun “I” is pronounced as “ah-ee”. Each time we say “I”, we draw on the metamorphic powers of Luna. But we have to make a choice. We can focus on the bright side of the Moon, that is, on the lighter shade of violet that leads to the soothing lavender. Or we can get stuck on the dark side of the Moon, and sink deeper and deeper into darkness of the dark purple, abandoning the Light and get lost in the shadows. The choice is ours. Will we lift the energies of the Earth to the next level, closer to the Spirit world? Or will we annihilate existence with hectic lifestyles devoid of Light and Love? What do you choose? Each Monday, the day of the Moon, we are offered the opportunity anew. Will we strive to imbue the workweek with Love, or will we yet again be a victim of tight schedules, filled with worries and anxieties?
